In a series of interconnected essays examining figures from numerous art forms and different time periods, Dederer provides an extended meditation on the question: What do we do with the art of monstrous men? This is the problem that occupies Halen and it is recapitulated in “Monster: A Fan’s Dilemma,” the latest volume by U.S. The word “maybe” in this sentence does a lot of heavy lifting how, one might reasonably ask, is one to separate a violent esthetic from violence IRL where is the demarcation point between a violent subject or character and a violent creator? How carefully, in other words, should one work to separate the art from the artist who created it? “If I studied very carefully, maybe I could identify the warning signs, learn to spot danger in an aesthetic, in a grammar.” ![]() “Here were the words of the rapists and manipulators and assailants written down,” Halen observes. Halen’s “scuffed white Ikea unit” contained a “growing pile of pulled volumes,” all of which, the author was aware, were written by men who had some stain of violence attached to them. In River Halen’s 2022 memoir/poetry hybrid “Dream Rooms,” the author writes about curating a section of their personal library dedicated to books written by men who had been accused of assaulting women. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is another topic that I wanted readers to think about. Did they have redeeming qualities? Maybe. It may have action adventure elements, but this is a historical fiction book at its core. I wrote this story with the intent of exposing the truth, if you will. And if the odd story does contain a pirate that is a true villain, then that pirate usually becomes a hero by the end, or does something redeeming in the eyes of the hero. ![]() If a story gives them a villainous flair, we’re meant to find it cool or badass. In pop culture, they are depicted more as treasure hunters than as thieves and murderers. We view them as adventurous, misunderstood, humorous, romantic. Too many movies put them in the hero’s role. What do you want readers to learn from this book?įirst and foremost to understand that pirates were, well, villains. If popular demand is strong enough, then I definitely would write one. I had not intended to write a sequel, but a few people have suggested it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also a relief to get an unabridged version. ![]() And Deep Secret is one of her best: a hilarious send-up of science. This book is like an old friend that is a joy to revisit time after time and I'm pleased that now I can revisit the audio version as well as on the page. Shes a damn genius, wildly clever and funny, and a deep, unsentimental romantic to boot. I particularly liked that they both seemed to have worked together to make their character voices similar but without overdoing it. Apart from that, it is a great performance of all the voices and I liked Harriet Carmichael too, although I tend to think Maree's voice is a bit lower than she plays it. You can suggest whispering or shouting without doing it. One slight annoyance is that the sound level of Chris Webster's performance varies a bit too much. I wasn't sure about the performances initially, but they really grew on me. The central characters, Rupert and Maree are beautifully drawn. they are not perfect and you like them in spite of or even because of their failings. One of the best things about DWJ characters is that they are believable. AUTHOR ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER/to Fiona with lots of love, Diana Wynne Jones. It stretches across worlds with a narrative that unfurls slowly, revealing things as it goes along. There's a lot going on in it, it is clever, in a subtle way, rather than being in your face. Weaving a huge amount of historical detail seamlessly into the story, Anderson creates a vivid setting, believable characters both good and despicable and a clear portrayal of the moral ambiguity of the Revolutionary age.
